Give Attention to Reading

The young evangelist Timothy was admonished by the Holy Spirit in 1 Timothy 4:13 to “give attention to reading.” The Father would have each of His children to “grow in the grace and knowledge of our Lord and Savior Jesus Christ” (2 Peter 3:18). If each of us is to “come to the unity of the faith and of the knowledge of the Son of God, to a perfect man, to the measure of the stature of the fullness of Christ,” each of us must spend time reading God’s word (Ephesians 4:13).

We are to read “the Holy Scriptures,” which are able to make us “wise for salvation through faith which is in Christ Jesus” (2 Timothy 3:15). It is important to read the word of God because the word of God is “truth” (John 17:17). This “truth” will set us free and enable us to live lives that glorify God (John 8:32; 2 Timothy 3:16-17).

Let us make a commitment to read the New Testament in 2011. Set aside some time each day to read a small portion of our Father’s will for our lives. If we will devote ourselves to the reading of His word, if we will meditate on the truth that GOD’S word is, if we will prayerfully apply its teachings to our lives, we will experience a wonderful year of spiritual growth that will transcend our lives into eternity: “But you, beloved, building yourselves up on your most holy faith, praying in the Holy Spirit, keep yourselves in the love of God, looking for the mercy of our Lord Jesus Christ unto eternal life” (Jude 20-21; NKJV).
